What is a PET TRUST?
As a pet owner you want the best for your pet. When the day comes that
you are no longer able to provide for the care of your pet or pets, a PET TRUST can ensure that
your wishes are known to those who will care for your pets. A PET TRUST can provide
funds and directions to assist in day to day care issues as well as life
or death decisions for your pets.
A PET TRUST is a legal document you can create to ensure that
your pets will be cared for as you yourself have cared for them. In a PET TRUST you
can select the person you feel will best care for your pet in the event of your death
or disability.
Within the PET TRUST you can list your preferences for the
care of your pet on various issues, such as:
- Who should care for your pet on your death or disability.
- What veterinarian should address your pet's health care needs.
- What kind of food should your pet be given.
- Where should your pet be boarded if the care giver goes on vacation.
- Who should assume care duties for your pet if the first person you select can no longer
care for your pet.
Though only one individual need be designated, you may select more than one individual
who you believe will best look after your pet. You may have one person responsible for caring
for your pet and another person responsible for overseeing the financial aspects of your
PET TRUST.
In setting up your PET TRUST you will need to estimate your pet's future needs.
As a part of your estimate you will need to consider what measures you will
want to be taken to extend your pet's life, should your pet ever become seriously ill.
Once you determine how much money will be required, it is up to you to select a bank trust
department or individual to hold the PET TRUST money for your pet. You will also be
asked to select a pet organization, religious group, or individual, who will receive
any remaining money should your pet pass away with money remaining in the trust.
It is entirely up to you.
Once completed, your PET TRUST, should be kept with all of your other important legal
documents. We will provide you with a card to keep in your wallet to help guarantee that
someone can begin to care for your pets as soon as is possible.
