Recent events taking place in Florida have drawn national and international attention to difficult decisions that individuals and their families must make, in the absence of written instructions, regarding end-of-life decisions.

Commonly referred to as a Living Will or an Advance Health Care Directive, California law acknowledges that an adult of sound mind has the fundamental right to control the decisions relating to his or her own health care, including the decision of whether life-sustaining treatment should be withheld or withdrawn. Under the law you may express your desires about what means you would like to be taken to extend your life if:

• current medical skill and technology would not be able to reverse an incurable an irreversible condition that will result in your death in a short period of time;
• if you have become unconscious and, to a reasonable degree of medical certainty, you would not be able to regain consciousness; or,
• the likely risks and burdens of treatment would outweigh the expected benefits.

Now is the time to make sure there is no doubt about the decision you have made. Create an advance health care directive now because it will help you and your family should the time ever arise. DON’T LEAVE SUCH IMPORTANT DECISIONS TO BE DECIDED BY JUDGES OR ELECTED OFFICIALS.
